The Diary of Kaye

“Okay, I have you booked for 2:00p.m. Mrs. Sullivan. Very good, We look forward to seeing you.” Matt hung up the phone and continued to ignore the fact that I had been standing next to his desk for the last twenty minutes. He knew what was coming, and I knew how afraid he was to say the words out loud. I had been working for Matt for the last two and half years at Tranquil Day Spa. It had been a local spa in the community for over a decade. I was grateful the day they called me with a position to be a receptionist there. It was the perfect job for me at the time. I was entering my senior year of high school and still needed a job I could walk to from my house. They were eager to have me on board and I felt the same. Every once in a while an old friend of mine would pop in the store and offer me a job working at the restaurant he worked in. I always appreciated the offer, but refused him almost on every occasion. I was happy at Tranquil. I had very little responsibility and enjoyed getting paid for doing my homework. I also enjoyed being the favorite employee with Matt. I was able to get away with a lot more than the other receptionists and I loved how good I was treated. Everything was great except for one thing, money. While my job had been perfect for my senior year of high school it became much harder to support myself when I entered college. Making $9 an hour and only working 15 hours was not going to cut it anymore. I called my friend Jake up and see if the offer to work at his restaurant was still good. He told me it was and I could apply for the job with him if I’d like. I accepted and in that moment everything I had ever known about life was about to change.
