The Diary of Kaye
“Nervous?” Jake said asked as I buckled in my seatbelt. “Yes, How do I look? How’s my hair? Do you think this outfit is okay?” I asked nervously. “Ha, Kaye, You’ll be fine just relax. I think Tim is there today too. He’s one of the managers that works there. All the girls think he’s so cute. I don’t know what they see in him, plus he has a girlfriend.” Jake replied, hinting not to fall for Tim. “Don’t worry, I have a boyfriend, and I am only concerned about getting this job now that I’m pretty much jobless.” I replied. “Matt was that hard on you huh?” Jake asked. “He was just upset I guess. You know, he cares a lot about me, I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him.” I replied. We pulled up to the restaurant and I immediately noticed the neon lights in the windows. As Jake parked I dazed into the restaurant and realized just how big of a step I was about to take. “Okay, We’re here, don’t be nervous, you’ll be fine.” Jake reassured me.
Jake opened the door for me and as I walked in I immediately felt like a fish out of water. “Hey Amanda,” Jake yelled, “Tim here?” “Hey Jake, Yeah, He’s in the back I’ll go get him.” she replied. I walked up to the counter and took a seat on one of the stools in front of the ice cream bar. I began to look around and saw all the different posters with how to make all the different drinks, Chatterbox had to offer. I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest with nervousness. “Hey Jake!” yelled a man walking up with a red collared polo with khaki’s. He was about 5’8 dark hair slicked back, brown eyes, and stocky. “Is this your friend?” He asked smiling at me. “Ugh, hi I’m Kaye.” I replied. “Nice to meet you Kaye, so Jake tells me you’re looking for a job.” he inquired. “Yes, but I have never served before.” I replied. As I looked at him I couldn’t tell what all the fuss was about. Here I was expecting to meet prince charming and he looked like average joe. “Actually we prefer at Chatterbox if you don’t have experience. It’s easier for us to train you.” He replied. “Jake why don’t you get Kaye an application and just make sure you put down your availability.” he said. “Oh I can start tomorrow!” I stated eagerly. “I’m sorry, it’s just that my recent job pretty much told me not to come back, so I can start tomorrow.” I explained. “Ha, well you’re very sweet. I’ll see what I can do.” He replied. As I began to fill out the application Tim began to make small talk with Jake and I. “So Kaye, do you go to school?” Tim asked. “Yes, I’m actually transferring from community college to a University in the fall.” I replied. “Very nice, I went to school in Boston and it was the best time of my life.” He smiled. “How old are you? If you don’t mind me asking.” I asked. “Ha, not at all I’m 23.” He replied. Jake sat next to me shaking his head the whole time. He had known Tim all too well and knew how he could put the charm on any girl. I was to naive to see it. “Oh, um, I have a conflict in August. I’m going away with my boyfriend. We have plans for a cruise.” I explained. “Okay, not a problem. We can figure that out when the time comes. I’ll be going away around the same time also.” He replied. “Nice, where you going?” I asked. “California.” He replied, “My girlfriend lives there.” “How long have you two been together, if you don’t mind me asking again” I said smiling. I could hear the small laughter seeping from Jake’s mouth. “Three years.” He replied. It was a strange moment between Tim and I. As he told me how long him and his girlfriend had been together something struck me. It was like a small glimpse into the future and something told me, somewhere down the line he was going to be with me. I quickly disregarded the feeling as fast as I could and finished the last sentence of my application. “Well, I’m all finished.” I said as I quickly stood up wanting to leave as fast as humanly possible. “Great, well nice to meet you Kaye.” He reached over an shook my hand. “You too Tim.” I walked out and Jake had the biggest smile on his face. “What?” I yelled. “Every girl, it’s actually kind of sad considering what a jerk he is” He said chuckling. “I was just sucking up Jake.” I said bitterly. “I need this job, and if flirting is going to give it to me then that is what I’ll have to do” I explained. “Whatever you say Kaye.” he said as he continued to chuckle all the way back to the car.
